A control valve is a power operated device that can change the fluid flow rate in a process control system. It includes a valve and its connected actuator, which can change the position of the flow control element in the valve based on signals from the control system. Control valve is a key basic component of industrial automation, widely used in national economic lifeline industries such as petroleum and natural gas, petrochemical industry, metallurgy and steel, power, light industry, and many basic industries. It is the core component for accurately controlling process parameters such as medium flow rate, pressure, temperature, and liquid level in industrial processes.
As the terminal control component of process industry control systems, control valves are complex high-tech products. Their application in industrial control systems requires not only static performance indicators such as flow capacity, leakage rate, and material adaptability, but also the function of adjusting process parameters. At the same time, it also determines the stability, accuracy, and automation level of the control system. With the advancement of technology, the number of complex and extreme working conditions such as ultra-high pressure, vacuum, ultra-high temperature, ultra-low temperature, acidity, corrosion, flammability and explosiveness, multiphase flow, etc. in industrial control systems is increasing. This has put forward higher and stricter requirements for the safety, reliability, and service life of control valves, and further raised the requirements for process equipment, design level, process level, and testing methods in production and manufacturing. The development level of control valve technology reflects the country's basic equipment manufacturing capability and industrial modernization level, and is a necessary condition for the process industry to achieve automation and intelligence.
Although the structure of control valves is basically composed of valve body components, actuators, and control devices (accessories), due to the direct contact between their main parts and the controlled (fluid) medium, when designing control valves, not only should mechanical strength, stiffness, manufacturing processes, friction, wear and other issues be considered, but also the physical and chemical effects of the fluid, as well as the problems caused by fluid dynamics and thermal effects. The design and manufacturing of control valves not only involve knowledge of mechanical design, mechanical manufacturing, and automatic control disciplines, but also require knowledge of materials science, corrosion science, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and heat transfer.
At the same time, due to the wide variety and large number of control valves used, practitioners must comprehensively apply various knowledge, implement relevant standards, and conduct experimental research and practice in order to ultimately complete the design, manufacturing, selection, application, installation, maintenance, and other work of control valves.
